Conflict of Interest? Committee Connected to 1A Legal Complaint is Tied to Jena Griswold’s Campaign

Jefferson County, CO – A member of the issue committee connected to the misleading Jefferson County 1A “no” argument scandal is also tied to Secretary of State Jena Griswold’s campaign.

As the Secretary of State, Griswold’s office is in charge of investigating a complaint filed against the Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder’s office. The Clerk and Recorder, George Stern (D-Jefferson County), approved improperly filed comments “opposing” the property tax hike in the County.

All comments on ballot initiatives printed in voter guides require an address and signature. The registered agent for the committee supporting the tax hike wrote the comments for the tax hike’s “no” argument. The con statement was then submitted by another voter at her address – without an address or signature. This is according to 9News coverage, where Stern also admitted he accepted and printed the comments anyway.

So the Clerk and Recorder appears complicit in printing misleading information for voters without adhering to Colorado state law. Of course, it will be up to Griswold’s office to make a final decision.

How is this connected to Griswold’s office, which is tasked with the investigation?

Conflict of Interest?

Rebecca Winning is the registered agent for Keep Jeffco Safe, the pro-tax hike committee for Jefferson County 1A. She also shares the same address as John Gill, who submitted the misleading argument against the 1A tax increase.

The filing agent for Winning’s pro-tax increase committee is Rachel Gordon. Gordon is the registered agent on Jena Griswold’s 2022 candidate committee.

Gordon’s connections to left-wing political issue committees do not stop there. She is the registered agent for Yes on National Popular Vote and the committee that opposed Amendment 74 in the 2018 election. Amendment 74 was an effort to counter Proposition 112, the oil and gas destroying proposition that failed in the 2018 election.

Will Griswold’s close ties to Gordon interfere with her office’s investigation of the Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder’s office?

We believe the Secretary of State’s office needs to examine any potential contact between the Clerk’s office and Keep Jeffco Safe. After all, Winning, the committee’s registered agent, is already tied to the improper filing of the Jefferson County 1A “no” argument. As the filing agent for the committee, Gordon may come under scrutiny as well.

This is a developing investigation. The Colorado Citizen Press will continue to monitor the situation.
