Government Versus Private Sector Hypocrisy

Denver, CO – A topic we have covered quite a bit has been the Paid Family Leave legislation. In a nutshell, it takes away the ability of an employer to negotiate paid leave with their employee by forcing a one-size-fits-all on businesses.

If you want more background on this issue, check out the following articles:

The bottom line is that this mandate on businesses will not only affect their bottom line, but it will significantly impact hiring and the economy in Colorado. This is coupled with the fact that the fiscal impact estimate by the economists at the legislature has dramatically increased from the original bill from the 2019 legislative session. This legislation alone could kill Colorado’s economy.

But, hey, we’ve covered this at length. So, let’s talk about the hypocrisy.

Governor Jared Polis, in his budget, called for Paid Family Leave to be implemented on state government via a policy change. Since this will cost money, the Joint Budget Committee (JBC) in the State Legislature has to sign off on it.

Fortunately for taxpayers, the JBC rejected Polis’ proposal in a 6-0 unanimous vote. Some members even questioned whether Polis has the authority to institute this program.

Here’s the kicker, and the hypocrisy – Democrats who support this same legislation for private businesses, voted against the same standards for the state government. Mandates are okay for the private sector but not for the government?

Democrats have once again proven that there is a double standard. At least taxpayers will be spared of wasting more money on a government program.

We wish the JBC said NO to more spending proposals.
