Former Governor John Hickenlooper is determined his campaign will go down in a fiery crash before he concedes defeat and quits the campaign trail.

The Democratic presidential hopeful is struggling to come up with the poll numbers or the donor requirements to reach the next Democratic debate (we covered the last debate here).

Amongst reports of his campaign team jumping ship, this is what Hickenlooper recently said in Iowa:

“Certainly the vast majority of the problem with the campaign was me not being as good of a messenger as I need to be, but you can’t switch or trade in a new candidate,” he said in an interview with a local reporter after a town hall in Perry, Iowa.

Hickenlooper quoted while attempting to control the damage to his campaign

We agree with the first part of Hickenlooper’s assessment. He is “not being as good of a messenger” as he needs to be. Unfortunately for his campaign, we do not believe he can fix that problem.

What this quote really shows about the former governor, is his lack of ability to set himself apart from the pack on the national stage. Hickenlooper relied on his persona to propel him to office in the past (because he was never a good messenger), and it just won’t work this time.

Time To Drop Out?

His campaign does not need to “trade in a new candidate.” His campaign needs to pack their bags and head home, where Hickenlooper can brew beer, play the banjo, and act like the “cool guy” he portrays himself as.

Hickenlooper is off message when it comes to the current trend of Democratic presidential candidates. Remember when he denounced socialism in socialist California? We still think he is a socialist, but that is not the point.

We find it highly unlikely Hickenlooper will gain any traction in this crowded primary. On top of that, we think he is too scared of Senator Cory Gardner to challenge him.

Or, maybe he is afraid of Mike Johnston? Either way, Hickenlooper’s political career is nearly over.

Odds are, Hickenlooper will follow Eric Swalwell in dropping out when his donor pool dries up.
