Over 100,000 People Possibly Out of Work With Less Than 1000 Cases Reported in Colorado

Denver, CO – Over 100,000 people are possibly out of work with less than 1000 confirmed or presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in Colorado as of 4:00 P.M.

Last week, about 40,000 unemployment claims were filed in Colorado, according to The Denver Channel. On Monday morning, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment had over 180,000 attempts to contact the call center, according to the Colorado Sun.

We expect 40,000 is significantly lower than the number of people out of work in Colorado due to Governor Jared Polis’ draconian mandates. Take this statement from Cher Haavind, Deputy Executive Director at the CDLE to explain how dire the economic situation is in Colorado.

By comparison, at the peak of the last recession in 2008, the agency dealt with an average of 7,700 unemployment claims a week, she said.

“Quite frankly, since there’s much more traffic to the site, the number of claims could quadruple,” she said.

Now, the estimate that “the number of claims could quadruple” was based on the estimated 28,00 claims from last week reported by the Colorado Sun three days ago.

That means 112,000 Coloradans may seek unemployment benefits. With the new report of 40,000 filed claims, 70,000 more claims do not seem out of the question.

Keep in mind; these are just the people who will seek unemployment benefits. Many people will not, at least for a while, due to one reason or another. Others may not be eligible for unemployment.

Unfortunately, this is likely just the tip of the iceberg for the economic and financial woes Coloradans will face. And it is all due to the actions by the state government and local municipalities.

Judging by the inevitable economic crisis, the government likely did more harm than good. The reality of the matter is we may soon be asking, was it worth it?

Only time will tell if the dramatic and oppressive actions by Polis and other leaders are an overreaction.

  1. No excuse, much less reason, for draconian measures has come close to justifying knee-jerks as pounce on any pretense of rationale to deny civil rights.
The Patriot Act has been cited as the disasterous model for taking advantage of any adverse circumstance with which piss-poor sports can play politics as if rule of law is a game, but when Bill Clinton encouraged murdering murderers in Arkansas, killing a 15-year national moratorium on capital punishment, it all depended on what your definition of “is” is. Indeed, how do you tell a child two wrongs make a right?
    Just lie.
Who pray in church on Sunday, but, the rest of the day or week practicing escalation beyond an eye for an eye, really belong in a synagogue?
What difference, at this point, does it make?
Is this what Rhodes Scholars learn at Oxford, to be regaled as a political genius by morally destitute morons?
    Who cares?
