Denver, CO – Senator Faith Winter’s (D-Adams) unaffordable paid family leave program lost two sponsors, and may not be introduced according to 9News.
Senator Angela Williams (D-Denver) and Representative Monica Duran (D-Jefferson) both pulled their sponsorship of Winter’s pet project. This leaves the bill at risk of not being introduced. Representative Matt Gray (D-Boulder) remains as a sponsor.
Williams had this to say about her change in support.
“This bill in its current form does not deliver a benefit to the vast majority who tend to work in low-wage jobs that often lack stability. We represent those who come from the most marginalized communities and who are most likely to suffer job losses when they take time to care for themselves and their families. We believe strongly in Paid Family Medical Leave in principle but are struggling with many of the details,” wrote Williams.

To be clear, any program that forces employers to provide 8-12 weeks for paid time off (potentially every year) is bad for Coloradans. If you are a business owner with 20 employees, can you imagine being forced to foot those costs? Paid family leave will eliminate the jobs it intends workers to be able to keep.
Democrat priorities like this will run businesses out of Colorado. Period.
While a paid family leave bill may not make it to the floor this legislative session, there is a strong chance outside groups pay to put it on a ballot soon enough.
