This article is about illegal aliens, and President Trump putting pressure on the country directly South of us to clean up their act. Now that we got your attention, we pause for some incessant rambling about conservatives, liberals, control, liberty, and freedom.
Readers, if you really boil it down to the most base philosophy differentiating “conservatives” and “liberals”, it is about control. Think about it: liberals want gun control, control over how to live your lives, control over how you fuel your car, control over where you live, even control over what you put in your body (think smoking and soda bans).
“Conservatives” believe in noble concepts like freedom and liberty. These concepts boil down to you the citizen being able to make choices for yourself without intervention. Conservatives generally believe in the free market – as in no government control of free markets, the economy, etc. Now we realize, not all “conservatives” are created equal, and a lot of them hide behind the label of “conservative” to exert more control.
Then we get a President like Donald Trump that imposes controlling tactics on the free market like tariffs. If you don’t know what a tariff is, it’s basically an import tax on goods. Think Chinese or Mexican goods shipped to the U.S. are taxed to not undercut American products. In turn, products for the consumer (you) become more expensive. This is anti-free market 101, so what’s a conservative to do?
Well, first we justify tariffs on China as a negotiating tactic because China has been sneaky in breaking trade deals for decades – but this is still anti-free market. We get it, it may make sense, like a nuclear option. However, if we don’t want control, we need to universally apply this across all policy, right?!?!
NOW WE ARE TO THE MEAT OF THIS ARTICLE
After tariffs on China raised conservative eyebrows, President Trump does this – and we here at the Colorado Citizens Press are about as conflicted as we’ve ever been.
Trump wants to impose tariffs on Mexico to make them get their act together, fix their economy, to stop illegal aliens from invading our country. YESSSSSS! 100% YESSS…We mean, what about free markets? Oh crap, we are torn here.
THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN. Mexico’s socialist economy, that has a built-in, caste-type system for their citizens has to change. If you do a little research (you can use Google!), you can easily find out that there is a wealthy old-money political class that rules Mexico. Their policies have created generations of poverty in that country, on top of controlling their citizens like taking their guns.
Mexican politicians have been happy to dump their problems on their northern neighbor, the United States. This has to stop. Check this out from the AP (click here).
Hitting these families bottom line with tariffs may be a good start. We applaud President Trump for his effort. We also hate tariffs. So we are torn here at the Colorado Citizens Press. What’s a Build The Wall, Pro-liberty, free-marketeer to do here?
