Is Polis About to Take Control of the Housing Market by Banning Evictions?

Denver, CO – Is Governor Jared Polis about to take control of the housing market by banning evictions in Colorado for May?

He said as much in his press conference yesterday.

Polis signed an executive order advising governments to take action to stop evictions processes in late March. It expires today, and Polis promised to renew and strengthen it before it expires.

On Wednesday, Polis promised to act before that his order expires Thursday.

“I will be renewing it and strengthening it,” he said at a press conference.

Our guess is Polis plans to amend the executive order to halt eviction processes in courts. This would be a major overreach into the private housing market.

Polis continues to exercise an unprecedented level of control over companies, private businesses, and citizens.

Taking this step could cause major damage to the housing market in Colorado. If landlords have too many units that cannot or refuse to pay rent, they may be forced to hike other rent prices or even shut down.

Colorado’s decimated job market and economy prove that government interference in the free market is destructive. It will prove to be the same if Polis meddles in the housing market.
