Denver, CO – Ex-governor John Hickenlooper posted a fundraising record of $2.1 million in under six weeks after announcing his candidacy for Senate.

The failed presidential candidate claimed he was “not cut out to be a senator” back in February 2019. He also bragged about his ties to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

So how does a candidate campaign for a job they claim they do not want and then raise a record amount of money?

In Hickenlooper’s case, backing by the establishment certainly helped. He drew the ire of at least six female candidates after the National Democratic Senatorial Committee endorsed his late entrance into the race.

It will not all be smooth sailing for Hickenlooper, especially with a history of gaffes during his self-absorbed presidential run.

The Democratic golden boy will face a tough opponent in Senator Cory Gardner. Gardner’s war chest contains $6.7 million, while Hickenlooper reportedly ended this period with $1.7 million on hand.

Hickenlooper will also need to fend off the remaining field of primary candidates, which will surely cut into his own war chest.

Nothing is off the table, though.

Gardner’s Senate seat is likely the closest contested Senate race of 2020. Tons of money will pour in from both sides, and both candidates will have to run solid campaigns to win.

  1. How did he raise that much? Planned Parenthood. Soros. The dems are trying to flip the Senate to take Trump out.
