Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Michael Bennet (CO) found out on Wednesday that he didn’t qualify for the debate stage in September. This should be a death knell for any candidate, as U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) dropped out tonight. Gillibrand was polling slightly ahead of Bennet with better fundraising numbers.
Much like John Hickenlooper, we’re waiting for Bennet drop out. Bennet, unlike Hickenlooper, unfortunately, has a day job – representing Colorado and trying to ruin the country. Bennet isn’t up for re-election in Colorado until 2022.
For example, we wrote about hypocrisy in the Democratic Senatorial Committee after they endorsed Hickenlooper. Now that intra-party feud looks like what Republicans usually go through every election cycle. In fact, it’s escalated with local Democratic Party officers lashing out at their national organizations. We’ve never seen this in Colorado from the Democrats because they usually resist heated primaries, unlike the GOP. So grab the popcorn!
Now, we have not written much about Michael Bennet. He is pretty dull, and he is definitely a far-lefty. Bennet is attempting to appear more centrist (mainly to differentiate himself from the Bernie Bros. and Elizabeth Warrens), but his record speaks for itself. In fact, we wrote about one of his stupid lefty ideas about forcing companies to disclose their climate change role.
Bennet questioned the rules on what it takes to qualify for the debate (130,000 individual donors and 2% in 3 of 4 polls), took a swipe at the GOP saying, “If we wanted to be the party that excluded people, we’d be Republicans.” Of course, the Democrats exclude everyone and like to play identity politics by playing people against each other, but there is nothing to see here.
Our guess is we’ll see a press release from the Bennet campaign in the next week saying he’s coming back to Colorado for a much-needed break with his family. Then we’ll see the standard, “it was a family decision” to drop out of the race press release. What a bummer, because Bennet could have really helped destroy Colorado Democrats if he had a personality and was a viable candidate for President.
